Between 1st May and 1st July 2016 as a part of Campaign activities within Project Homo Europoeanus, through assistance and mobilization of youth activists within schools in wider Belgrade area, Civic Initiatives (CI) initiated series of workshops “What is EU to You?”.
As a Candidate country that since recently has opened negotiation Chapters with the EU, the Government and top establishment are well introduced to standards that need to be reached in certain areas, however these issues are not being communicated to wider public appropriately through media nor educational system. So far, within younger generation a significant drop in support to EU accession process has been noted but so far has not been addressed appropriately. EU remains to be perceived only as a generous donor that in return keeps setting new criteria, standards and conditions that Serbia i.e. Serbian Government can hardly meet.
For these reasons, CI reached out to schools and Civic education teachers to initiate series of workshops that will facilitate students’ reflection on EU and its core values. Following these workshops were public events / actions conducted by the students in their communities and based on their conclusions what EU means to them and how they see their local communities improve through EU accession process.
